Processes in poultry and dairy

Before getting involved in it myself, my opinion on the veggie diet was that people were only veggies because they cared about animals and didn’t want to put another living, sentient being through any suffering. When I adopted the diet myself and spoke to others about it, this did turn out to be true in many cases. However, some people just didn’t like the taste or texture of meat, and didn’t think about the ethical side of it that much.

When I looked into veggie food more specifically, the information I found was a lot deeper and more sinister than I’d bargained for. I’d assumed that “vegetarian-friendly” sources of food meant no physical or mental harm to the animal. However, when I looked into the dairy and poultry processes, the animals seemed to be put through equal—if not more—suffering than being killed for meat. Morally, it was as bad as it gets. Then I realised that the dairy industry is the meat industry, because every cow that produces milk becomes meat eventually. And the poultry industry is the meat industry, because every chicken that lays eggs becomes meat eventually too.

As this stage was so current to me, all the research and information really hit home. I saw very early on that the vegetarians who don’t eat meat because they care about animals may not have researched what the dairy and poultry processes entail. If they did, they may want to go plant-based asap. I realised that even for some vegetarians, there is a lack of association between the process and the product. As the old saying goes, “ignorance is bliss.”

When looking at meat or fish on a plate, some people tend not to think about how it got there. If that’s the case for a blatant piece of flesh in a see-through packet, just imagine how far removed your brain, and ultimately your morals, get from a chocolate bar, cheese, or a protein flapjack. Unless you take the time to look into how this gets there, you just wouldn’t know. The marketing and packaging of products these days is very clever. Things can seem way more fun than what they actually are! One thing is for sure, after I acknowledged the association between the process and the product, I was ready to move forward. And I wasn’t deterred by what people think of a plant-based diet—I was moving to the next stage.
